Presence when it matters most.
No one should have to face the end of life alone. Whether you're the person nearing the end of life or someone who loves them, our Bedside Companion service provides a calm, reassuring presence during one of life's most tender and emotional times.
What This Service Includes:
As death approaches, families often find themselves trying to balance being present with everything else that life continues to demand. They need to sleep, eat, shower, care for children, attend appointments, or simply step outside for a breath of fresh air. Many caregivers struggle with guilt when they leave the bedside—even for a short time. Our role is to help ease that burden.
A Stillwater Bedside Companion remains with your loved one, offering compassionate companionship and a comforting presence while you take the time you need to care for yourself. We may read aloud, play favourite music, sit quietly, listen to stories, hold a hand if welcomed, or simply ensure that someone is there so your loved one is not alone.
Every visit is guided by the individual's wishes, comfort, beliefs, and level of interaction. Some people enjoy conversation. Others prefer silence. Some want music, prayer, or familiar routines. Others simply appreciate another caring person nearby.
We also provide reassurance and emotional support to family members, helping them understand what they may be seeing, encouraging them to take breaks without guilt, and offering a steady, compassionate presence during an uncertain time.
As an End-of-Life Doula, we do not provide medical care, administer medications, or replace nurses, hospice staff, or healthcare providers. Instead, we complement the care they provide by focusing on comfort, presence, dignity, and emotional support.
This Service May Be Right For You If:
- Your loved one doesn't want to be alone.
- You're the primary caregiver and need time to rest, sleep, eat, or attend to other responsibilities.
- Family members live far away or can't always be present.
- You would appreciate a calm, knowledgeable person to sit with your loved one.
- You're feeling overwhelmed and need reassurance that someone compassionate is there when you can't be.
What You Can Expect:
Before our visit, we'll talk about your loved one's preferences, routines, communication style, cultural or spiritual beliefs, and anything that helps them feel safe and comfortable.
During our time together, we'll adapt to their needs. Some visits are filled with conversation and storytelling. Others are spent sitting quietly in peaceful companionship. There is no expectation that every moment needs to be filled with words.
We'll communicate with you about our visit and let you know if there are any concerns that should be shared with your healthcare team. If something falls outside our role, we'll always encourage you to contact the appropriate medical professional.
The Outcome:
Our hope is that everyone involved feels a little less alone. For the person nearing the end of life, that means knowing someone is present with kindness, dignity, and respect. For family members, it means being able to rest, care for themselves, or step away for a short time without carrying the weight of wondering whether their loved one is alone. Sometimes the greatest gift we can offer isn't finding the right words. Sometimes it's simply pulling up a chair.
Planning for peace of mind.
Whether you're planning years in advance or facing an immediate diagnosis, our Planning Sessions provide a safe, supportive space to explore your wishes, ask questions, and make informed decisions. Together, we'll create a plan that reflects your values and gives you confidence that your voice will be heard.
What This Service Includes:
Planning looks different for every person.
Some people come to us because they've received a diagnosis and don't know where to begin. Others want to complete Advance Care Planning while they're healthy, organize important documents, discuss future healthcare wishes, prepare for difficult conversations with family members, or better understand the choices available to them.
During our sessions, we'll move at your pace. We'll answer questions honestly, help you organize your thoughts, explain unfamiliar terms or processes, identify community resources, and ensure you have the information you need to make decisions with confidence.
Our role isn't to tell you what to do—it's to help you understand your options so you can make decisions that reflect your own values and wishes.
This Service May Be Right For You If:
- You've recently received a serious diagnosis.
- You want to complete Advance Care Planning.
- You're supporting an aging parent.
- Your family is struggling to talk about future care.
- You're feeling overwhelmed and don't know where to begin.
- You simply want peace of mind knowing your wishes have been documented.
What You Can Expect:
Planning sessions are relaxed, conversational, and tailored to your needs. There is no pressure to complete everything in one visit. Some people need a single session, while others appreciate ongoing support as circumstances change.
We'll take things one step at a time, answer every question honestly, and make sure you leave with a clear understanding of what comes next.
The Outcome:
Our goal is simple. To replace uncertainty with clarity. You should leave with greater confidence, practical next steps, and the reassurance that your wishes are understood and respected.
Compassionate support for one of the first tasks families face after a loss.
After a loved one dies, families are often expected to clear a room in a retirement residence, long-term care home, hospice, or other care setting within just a few days. While still grieving, they may suddenly be faced with sorting through a lifetime of treasured belongings, making countless decisions, and wondering where to even begin.
You don't have to do that alone.
What This Service Includes:
Stillwater's Home Transition Services provide respectful, hands-on assistance with sorting, organizing, wrapping, labeling, and packing your loved one's belongings so they can be safely transported home or to another location.
Rather than rushing through the process, we take the time to handle every item with care and dignity. Photographs, letters, keepsakes, clothing, personal items, and cherished mementos are treated with the same respect we would hope someone would show our own families.
We can help organize belongings into clearly labelled categories, wrap fragile items, assist with documenting valuables, and prepare everything for transport. If requested, we can also help identify items that may require special handling, such as medications, medical equipment, or sensitive documents.
Our role is not to decide what should be kept or discarded. Those decisions always remain with you and your family.
This Service May Be Right For You If:
- A retirement residence or long-term care home has asked that a room be cleared within a specific timeframe.
- You're feeling emotionally overwhelmed and don't know where to begin.
- You'd like compassionate, practical support while sorting through your loved one's belongings.
- Family members live far away or aren't available to help.
- You simply don't want to carry this responsibility alone.
What You Can Expect:
Before we begin, we'll talk with you about your priorities, your timeline, and how involved you'd like to be.
Some families prefer to work alongside us, sharing stories and making decisions together. Others find it easier to step away while we carefully organize and pack belongings according to their instructions. There is no right or wrong approach—we'll adapt to what feels most comfortable for you.
Throughout the process, we'll communicate openly, respect your wishes, and move at a pace that balances compassion with the practical timelines often required by care facilities.
Please note that Home Transition Services are designed for smaller living spaces, such as retirement residences, long-term care homes, hospice rooms, and similar care settings.
Our focus is on providing compassionate support to families during the transition of these spaces.
If your loved one lived in a private home or a larger property requiring a full estate clean-out, we're happy to connect you with trusted professionals who specialize in whole-home transitions, estate clearing, and related services. Whenever possible, we'll help you find the right support for your situation—even if that service isn't provided directly by Stillwater.
The Outcome:
When the last box is packed, our hope is that you feel relief—not because the work was easy, but because you didn't have to carry it alone.
Instead of spending your energy worrying about logistics, you'll have had the opportunity to focus on what matters most: remembering your loved one, supporting one another, and taking the first steps through grief with a little less weight on your shoulders.
Sometimes compassion looks like holding a hand. Sometimes it looks like carrying the boxes.
Preserve your stories, your values, and the pieces of yourself that matter most.
When people think about leaving a legacy, they often think about wills, finances, or possessions.
Those things matter but they're only part of the story.
A true legacy is found in your memories, your life lessons, your traditions, your laughter, your favourite recipes, your words of encouragement, and the moments that shaped the person you are. These are the gifts that continue long after we're gone.
What This Service Includes:
Legacy Planning is an opportunity to intentionally preserve the parts of yourself that represent your life.
Together, we'll explore the stories, memories, beliefs, traditions, and messages you'd like to share with the people you love. There is no single way to create a legacy. Every project is as unique as the person creating it.
Your legacy might include:
- Letters for loved ones to read in the future.
- Audio or video messages.
- A written life story or collection of memories.
- Family recipes with the stories behind them.
- Advice for future generations.
- Ethical wills or personal values documents.
- Memory books or keepsake projects.
- Birthday, graduation, or anniversary messages.
- Favourite songs, poems, readings, or traditions you hope will continue.
- A collection of photographs with the stories that bring them to life.
You don't need to be a writer, artist, or public speaker. Our role is to help you discover meaningful ways to preserve your voice and ensure the people you love can continue hearing it for years to come.
This Service May Be Right For You If:
- You want your loved ones to know what mattered most to you.
- There are stories you've always wanted to tell.
- You have messages you'd like someone to receive in the future.
- You'd like to preserve family traditions, recipes, or memories.
- You want your grandchildren—or future generations—to know who you were.
- You simply don't know where to begin, but you know you want to leave something behind.
What You Can Expect:
Legacy Planning is never rushed.
Some people arrive with clear ideas about what they'd like to create. Others simply know they don't want their stories to disappear.
Both are wonderful places to begin.
We'll move at your pace, asking thoughtful questions, exploring memories together, and helping transform your ideas into meaningful keepsakes that feel authentic to you.
There is no pressure to create something perfect.
The most meaningful legacies are often the most honest.
The Outcome:
Our hope is that the people you love won't simply remember that you lived—they'll remember who you were.
Long after voices fade and photographs begin to age, your stories, wisdom, humour, traditions, and love can continue shaping the lives of the people who matter most.
Sometimes you don't need all the answers, you just need someone to help you take the next step.
Life doesn't always fit neatly into a category.
Sometimes you aren't looking for a formal planning session, bedside companionship, or legacy project. You simply need someone to listen, answer questions, help you work through a problem, or provide steady support during a difficult season.
That's what this service is for.
What This Service Includes:
Some days you may need help understanding information you've received from your healthcare team.
Other days you may simply need someone to sit with you while you talk through your fears, frustrations, or uncertainty.
We can help you organize your thoughts before an important meeting, navigate community resources, explore care options, or simply provide a calm, supportive presence when everything feels overwhelming.
You don't need to know exactly what you need before contacting us.
We'll help you figure that out together.
As an End-of-Life Care practice, our role is not to provide medical advice, counselling, or legal services. Instead, we provide honest information, practical guidance, emotional support, advocacy, and compassionate companionship while helping you navigate the challenges that often accompany serious illness, caregiving, grief, and major life transitions.
This Service May Be Right For You If:
- You're feeling overwhelmed and don't know where to begin.
- You have questions but aren't sure who to ask.
- You need help organizing your thoughts before making important decisions.
- You're supporting someone you love and need support yourself.
- You'd like someone to help you navigate available resources and services.
- You simply need someone who will listen without judgment.
What You Can Expect:
Every meeting begins with listening.
We'll take the time to understand your situation, your concerns, and what's most important to you. Together, we'll identify practical next steps, answer your questions honestly, and help you feel more confident moving forward.
There is no expectation that you'll have everything figured out before we meet. There is no pressure to make decisions before you're ready.
Our role is to walk beside you, one conversation at a time.
The Outcome:
You may not leave with every answer but you won't leave wondering what your next step is.
Our hope is that you'll feel heard, supported, and better equipped to move forward with greater clarity, confidence, and peace of mind.
Sometimes the greatest support isn't solving every problem.
It's knowing you don't have to face them alone.
Honouring a life in a way that feels meaningful, personal,
and true.
Planning a funeral, memorial, or Celebration of Life can be one of the most emotional responsibilities a family will ever face. At the same time you're grieving, you're often expected to make dozens of decisions, coordinate family members, meet deadlines, and create a service that somehow captures an entire lifetime.
You don't have to carry that responsibility alone.
What This Service Includes:
Stillwater's Memorial Planning service is designed to help individuals and families create a meaningful tribute that reflects the unique life, personality, values, and wishes of the person being honoured.
Whether you're planning ahead for yourself or organizing a service after the death of a loved one, we'll walk beside you through the planning process, helping you make informed decisions with confidence and compassion.
Together, we can help with:
- Planning a funeral, memorial service, or Celebration of Life.
- Exploring traditional, non-traditional, and personalized options.
- Developing an order of service or program.
- Choosing readings, music, photographs, poems, and meaningful tributes.
- Writing or refining eulogies, speeches, and obituary content.
- Brainstorming creative ways to celebrate a person's life, passions, and accomplishments.
- Helping families navigate difficult decisions together.
- Creating opportunities for children, grandchildren, friends, and chosen family to participate in meaningful ways.
- Coordinating with funeral homes, celebrants, cemeteries, venues, or other service providers as needed.
Our role is not to replace the services provided by funeral homes or licensed funeral professionals. Instead, we provide guidance, organization, emotional support, and practical assistance, helping families feel less overwhelmed while ensuring the service truly reflects the life being remembered.
This Service May Be Right For You If:
- You're planning ahead and want your wishes clearly documented.
- A loved one has recently died and you're feeling overwhelmed by everything that needs to be arranged.
- Your family has different ideas about what the service should include.
- You'd like the memorial to feel personal instead of following a standard template.
- You aren't sure what options are available.
- You simply want someone to help guide you through the planning process.
What You Can Expect:
Every planning conversation begins with a simple question: "Tell me about them."
Before we talk about music, flowers, or schedules, we want to know who this person was. What made them laugh? What did they love? What traditions mattered to them? What stories do people always tell? What would they want people to remember?
From there, we'll help you build a service that reflects the person, not just the process.
We'll move at a pace that respects both your timeline and your grief, helping you organize decisions, reduce stress, and create a gathering that feels authentic and meaningful.
Whether the service is held in a funeral home, a place of worship, a community hall, a backyard, or somewhere completely unique, our goal remains the same: to help honour a life with dignity and intention.
The Outcome:
When people leave a memorial, we hope they don't simply remember the service.
We hope they remember the person.
Our goal is to help create a gathering where stories are shared, memories are celebrated, tears and laughter are equally welcome, and everyone leaves feeling that the person they loved was honoured in a way that truly reflected who they were.
Because Every life tells a story and Every story deserves to be remembered.
"We cannot choose how every story ends. But together, we can help ensure it is remembered with dignity, compassion, and love."
